Frequently Asked Questions

Ask a Question

Why does Cumberland Endodontics start with a consultation?

Because the correct treatment depends on the correct diagnosis.

Similar symptoms can be caused by different problems, and not every painful tooth needs a root canal. Cumberland Endodontics evaluates the tooth first so that treatment is recommended only after we understand what is causing the problem and whether the tooth can be predictably saved.

Your endodontist reviews your symptoms, dental history, and relevant medical history and examines the area of concern.

Clinical testing and appropriate dental imaging are used to help establish a diagnosis. Your endodontist then explains the findings, prognosis, and reasonable treatment options before you decide how to proceed.

Tooth pain can have several causes, and different conditions require different treatment.

Performing a root canal on a tooth that is not actually causing the problem will not solve the patient’s symptoms.

Cumberland’s consult-first approach is designed to identify the source of the problem before choosing treatment.

Your endodontist combines several pieces of information rather than relying on a single test.

These may include:

  • Where and when the pain occurs
  • How the tooth responds to cold or other testing
  • Pain when biting
  • Examination of the tooth and surrounding tissues
  • Dental imaging
  • Previous dental treatment
  • The pattern and duration of your symptoms

The findings are considered together to determine the most likely diagnosis.

That can happen.

A traditional dental X-ray is only one part of the diagnostic process, and some conditions may not be obvious on a two-dimensional image.

Your endodontist compares the imaging with your symptoms and clinical examination and may recommend additional evaluation when the findings do not agree.

Yes.

Pain can sometimes be referred from another tooth or originate from nearby structures such as the sinuses, jaw muscles, joints, or nerves.

This is another reason diagnosis is important before beginning irreversible dental treatment.

Your endodontist will explain what the evaluation shows and what the appropriate next step may be.

Depending on the diagnosis, that could mean monitoring the tooth, treatment by your general dentist, evaluation by another dental or medical specialist, or no treatment at that time.

The goal of the consultation is not to find a reason to perform a root canal. The goal is to determine the right care for the problem.
